A WALLFLOWER IN THE AMAZON is the work of composer/arranger/JCA director Darrell Katz. It consists his compositions, and his arrangements of music by Duke Ellington and Willie Dixon. The Boston Phoenix calls Katz “... one of Boston's most ambitious and provocative jazz composers." Featured is extraordinary vocalist Rebecca Shrimpton, who is able to sing complex extended melodies with a relaxed jazz feel and to make lyricist Paula Tatarunis’ free verse sound conversational.
This even also celebrates the JCA's 25th year! The Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra has been a fixture on Boston’s creative music scene since its first performance in December 1985. Combining dedicated musicianship, innovative programming and fresh compositional ideas, JCA concerts are colorful, adventurous, high-energy events. The JCA Orchestra has released 8 critically acclaimed CDs.
Drawing on influences that span the history of jazz and the world's musical traditions, the JCA composers bring together a huge palette of sounds, structures and concepts. Many of the band’s featured soloists are bandleaders and composers in their own right, and are some of New England’s most creative musicians, including on flute: Hiro Honshuku; alto sax: Allan Chase and Jim Hobbs (of Fully Celebrated Orchestra); trumpet: Mike Peipman and Forbes Ghram; tenor sax: Phil Scarff (of Natraj); trombones and tuba: David Harris and Bill Lowe. The JCA Orchestra was a runner up in 2009’s Boston Phoenix Best of Boston poll. The group has also presented an illustrious group of guest performers including Oliver Lake, Steve Lacy, Dave Holland, Julius Hemphill, Sam Rivers and many others.
Of Katz’s last disc JCA Orchestra disc, The SAME THING, critics say:
“This is music for mind and soul” –The Montreal Gazette
“Over his career and small discography, bandleader Darrell Katz has forged an identity as a progressive and creative orchestrator of new music in a way that few can claim. ...” –All Music, Michael G. Nastos
“The Same Thing is a bold and impassioned musical statement from a composer who revels in the myriad possibilities afforded by a talented and flexible big band. One cannot help but admire Katz and the JCA for their dedication and commitment to creative music.” –Jazz Review.com
“Crazy, avant-garde, third-stream, god-knows-what big band composition that manages to stay in touch with what Julius Hemphill called "the hard blues." –Lerterland, David R. Adler
