JCA Orchestra at Emmanuel Center 4/23

 

On Friday, April 23, at 8 pm, at the Emmanuel Center, at Emmanuel Church in 

Boston, the Jazz Composers Alliance will present a program of creative music featuring compositions for the 19-piece JCA Orchestra by resident composers David Harris, Jim Hobbs, Darrell Katz, Bob Pilkington, Warren Senders, and Norm Zocher. Emmanuel Center is located at 15 Newbury Street in Boston. Admission is $12/$8 for seniors & students.  Also on the bill will be a new piece by trombonist/tubist Bill Lowe.

 

The Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra has been a fixture on Boston’s creative music 

scene since its first performance in December 1985. Combining dedicated musicianship, 

innovative programming and fresh compositional ideas, JCA concerts are colorful, adventurous and high-energy events. The JCA Orchestra has released four critically acclaimed CDs since 2003 (and 7 total): The Same Thing (Cadence), In, Thru and Out (Cadence), The Death of Simone Weil (Innova), and Celebration of the Spirit (C.I.M.P.), all of which feature the diverse writing styles of the JCA resident composers. A new CD was recorded at WGBH’s studios and is scheduled for release in August on Accurate records. 

 

Drawing on influences that span the history of jazz and encompass the world's musical 

traditions, the JCA composers bring together a huge palette of sounds, structures and concepts to make the JCA Orchestra's concerts unique sonic experiences. Many of the band’s featured soloists are bandleaders and composers in their own right, and are some of New England’s most creative musicians, including Hiro Honshuku (flute), Jim Hobbs (alto sax), Mike Peipman (trumpet), Phil Scarff (tenor sax), David Harris and Bill Lowe (trombone) and Rebecca Shrimpton (voice).  The JCA Orchestra was a runner up in last years Boston Phoenix Best of Boston poll.

 

The Jazz Composers Alliance would also like to announce that it has received operating support from The Massachusetts Cultural Council for 2009-10.

A 50¢ building restoration fee has been added to the price of tickets to insure the continued 

availability of the spaces of Emmanuel Church for events in the city of Boston.
