JCA Saxophone Quartet

With Rebecca Shrimpton, vocals

Lily Pad       Sunday, June 21

7 p.m. Tickets $10

The JCA Saxophone Quartet features four of Boston’s finest jazz saxophonists—Jim Hobbs (Fully Celebrated Orchestra), who The Boston Phoenix asks, “Is alto player Jim Hobbs the best saxophonist in Boston?” Alec Spiegelman (alto), Phil Scarff, leader of Natraj (tenor), and Melanie Howell (baritone)—performing original music by some of Boston’s most creative jazz composers—Darrell Katz, who The Boston Phoenix says is “one of Boston's most ambitious and provocative jazz composers”, Jim Hobbs, Bob Pilkington and Norm Zocher.  The sax quartet is drawn from the Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, a fixture on Boston's creative music scene since 1985.  The quartet is joined by singer and JCAO member, Rebecca Shrimpton, hailed as “a simply exquisite vocalist” (All About Jazz), whose “rich tones endow [the JCA’s music] with a hefty significance” (Britain’s Jazzwise magazine.)

The sax quartet has released one CD, I’m Me and You’re Not, featuring the music of Darrell Katz.

This concert will be part of GILLYPAD, which begins at 6pm with Notrio. Also on the bill is The Gil Aharon Trio.
